Diamond engagement ring in an ultrasonic cleaner basket + bottle of Vitaclean ultrasonic cleaner concentrate

Jewelry — where grease hides

Engagement rings or wedding bands worn daily collect microscopic amounts of grease and skin cells in areas fingers cannot reach:

  • Between the prongs holding the diamond (60% of accumulation)
  • In the crevices of side stone settings
  • Under the hinges of earrings
  • In the links of chains and bracelets
  • In the threads of clasps (earring nuts)

After 6-12 months of accumulation, you see: the diamond looks dull (grease reflects light differently), silver is gray (dust on patina), the bracelet is less flexible (grease in joints).

Vitaclean ultrasonic cleaner concentrate + ultrasonic cleaner breaks down grease in micro-crevices without mechanical contact — right where a brush would damage the finish.

Procedure — gold/silver/platinum jewelry

What you need

  • Vitaclean ultrasonic cleaner concentrate — 15 ml per cycle (1 tablespoon)
  • Ultrasonic cleaner 600-800 ml, 35-42 kHz (Hozly, Vevor, ~150 PLN)
  • Metal basket (usually included with the cleaner)
  • Lukewarm water ~25-40°C
  • Microfiber cloth for drying

Step-by-step procedure

  1. Pour into the cleaner: 15 ml Vitaclean ultrasonic cleaner concentrate + 600 ml lukewarm water (1:40)
  2. Place jewelry in the basket — NOT on the bottom of the cleaner (vibrations can scratch items against the metal bottom)
  3. Select a cycle: 5 minutes (standard) or 10 min (heavily soiled)
  4. Turn on the cleaner — you will hear a soft ultrasonic hum
  5. After the cycle, remove the basket
  6. Rinse jewelry under running lukewarm water for 10 seconds — removes residue of Vitaclean ultrasonic cleaner concentrate
  7. Dry with a soft microfiber cloth (NOT paper towels — they can scratch)
  8. For silver jewelry (tarnishes): after the cycle, polish with silver polishing paste

Time: 7-15 minutes. Cost: under 0.60 PLN (1 bottle of Vitaclean ultrasonic cleaner concentrate lasts for 67 cycles).

Special types of jewelry

Engagement rings / wedding bands

The most frequently cleaned jewelry. Standard: 5 minutes Vitaclean ultrasonic cleaner concentrate, every 4-6 weeks. Diamond and gold/platinum settings — safe.

Ring with pavé side diamonds (small diamonds next to the main one): just as safe. Cavitation cleans between every stone.

Rings with pearls or opals: DO NOT put in ultrasonic. Clean with microfiber + neutral soap.

Earrings

Diamond studs: 5 min, safe.

Earrings with pearls / dangling corals: NO — pearls will be damaged.

Long drop earrings with a metal hook + stone: depends on the stone. Diamond/sapphire OK, opal/pearl NO.

Chains and bracelets

5-10 min, safe for gold/silver. Note: Venetian gold chains (thin links) can get tangled in the basket — place them in a mesh bag (10-20 PLN, available in jewelry stores).

Women's / precious watches

Only if waterproof (5 ATM+). Full breakdown: Watches in an ultrasonic cleaner.

Family heirlooms

Consult with a gemologist before the first cycle. Old jewelry often has damage invisible to the naked eye (micro-cracks, glued repairs) — cavitation makes them worse.

Comparison: Vitaclean ultrasonic cleaner concentrate vs jeweler vs home methods

Method Effectiveness Time Cost per cycle
Vitaclean ultrasonic cleaner concentrate + ultrasonic cleaner very high 5-10 min below 0.60 PLN
Jeweler (ultrasonic cleaning) 99% 30 min 50-200 PLN
Connoisseurs Jewelry Cleaner 90% 5 min ~5-10 PLN
Soap + water + brush 60% 10 min ~0.30 PLN
Toothpaste (myth!) 30% 10 min ~0.50 PLN
Baking soda + aluminum foil (silver) 80% (only black silver) 10 min ~1 PLN

Vitaclean ultrasonic cleaner concentrate + cleaner = many times cheaper than a jeweler with 95% effectiveness.

Plan for jewelry at home

Home with minimal jewelry (1-2 precious items)

  • 600 ml cleaner (~150 PLN) + 1 L Vitaclean ultrasonic cleaner concentrate = investment under 250 PLN
  • Cycle once every 4-6 weeks, 1 bottle of Vitaclean ultrasonic cleaner concentrate lasts for ~5 years
  • Vs jeweler 4x a year x 100 PLN = 400 PLN annually

Home with a larger collection (5+ items)

  • 1-2 L cleaner (~250-400 PLN) + 1 L Vitaclean ultrasonic cleaner concentrate = investment under 550 PLN
  • Cycle every 1-2 months for different sets
  • Annual savings: ~600-1000 PLN

Jewelry store / service

  • 5-10 L professional cleaner with heating (~1500-3000 PLN)
  • Vitaclean ultrasonic cleaner concentrate or company preparation
  • 10-20 cycles daily

Most common mistakes

Skipping the test — first piece of precious jewelry in the cleaner without checking first → risk of damage. First do a 3-minute test on less precious jewelry (e.g., cheaper earrings).

Jewelry at the bottom of the cleaner — vibrations scratch metal against the steel bottom. Always in a metal basket.

Plastic basket — cavitation destroys plastic. Replace with a metal one.

Cycles of 30+ minutes — overkill. The most durable jewelry does not need more than 10 minutes. A long cycle can damage some stones (especially emerald with inclusions).

Pouring in full-strength Vitaclean ultrasonic cleaner concentrate — it is a 1:40 concentrate, never undiluted. It will destroy delicate coatings.

Mixing jewelry with different stones — ring with diamond + necklace with opal together = opal destroyed. Sort by stone hardness.

Skipping the drying — water stays in micro-crevices, spots after drying (especially hard water). Microfiber + keyboard blower (if clogged).

Toothpaste on jewelry — a popular myth. Toothpaste is abrasive (contains powdered silica) — it scratches delicate coatings, destroys gold-plated. NEVER.

After the cycle — long-term care

  1. Microfiber for drying — smooth, soft
  2. Keyboard blower for tight gaps
  3. Silver polishing with Hagerty/Goddard paste (if tarnished)
  4. Storage in a lockable box (do not leave in the open air — dust settles)
  5. Separating jewelry in pouches (to prevent scratching against each other)

Frequently asked questions

How to clean jewelry in an ultrasonic cleaner? +

Procedure: (1) Pour 15 ml of Vitaclean ultrasonic cleaner concentrate + 600 ml of lukewarm water into the cleaner, (2) Place the jewelry in a metal basket (NOT on the bottom of the cleaner), (3) Select a 5-10 minute cycle, (4) Rinse under running water for 10 seconds after the cycle, (5) Dry with a soft microfiber cloth. Rings, earrings, chains, bracelets — everything together (keep in mind that cavitation can tangle them; it is better to clean delicate items separately).

Is an ultrasonic cleaner safe for a diamond ring? +

YES — diamond has a Mohs hardness of 10 (the hardest known material), completely resistant to cavitation. Plus, gold/platinum settings are also safe. Exception: glued rings (where the diamond is glued instead of being set in prongs) — the glue dissolves during the cycle, and the stone will fall out. Check with a jeweler to see if the diamond is set (prongs visible) or glued (flat setting without prongs).

What about pearls in an ultrasonic cleaner? +

ABSOLUTELY NOT. Natural and cultured pearls have a nacre layer (mother-of-pearl) on the core — cavitation permanently destroys it. After one cycle in a cleaner, pearls lose their luster and can crack. Pearl cleaning: damp microfiber + neutral soap by hand, rinse with clean water, dry. NEVER use ultrasonic cleaners.

Can I clean silver in an ultrasonic cleaner? +

Partially YES. Vitaclean ultrasonic cleaner concentrate + ultrasound removes grease, dust, and dirt from 925 silver. But: silver naturally tarnishes (patina from sulfur in the air) — Vitaclean ultrasonic cleaner concentrate does NOT remove patina (black tarnish). For black silver: after the Vitaclean ultrasonic cleaner concentrate cycle, use a silver polishing paste (Hagerty, Goddard, ~30-50 PLN) or baking soda + aluminum foil + hot water (chemical method). Vitaclean ultrasonic cleaner concentrate + paste = full cleaning.

How long should the cycle be for jewelry? +

Standard: 5 minutes for most jewelry (fresh grease, dust). 10 minutes for heavily soiled items (a daily-worn ring, visible grime between prongs). 15-20 minutes in exceptional cases (jewelry stored for a long time in a styrofoam box — particles of styrofoam penetrated between the links). DO NOT exceed 30 minutes — some delicate stones can be damaged by a long cycle.

Can I clean jewelry with different stones together? +

Yes, but be careful. Rule: the least hard stone determines the limit. A ring with a diamond (Mohs 10) + a necklace with an opal (Mohs 5.5) together = NO (the opal will be destroyed). Safe combinations: diamond ring + diamond earrings + gold band. Dangerous: anything with pearls, opals, malachite, coral (organic, soft stones).

What if the jewelry is gold-plated? +

Gold-plated/gold-filled jewelry has a thin layer of gold over another metal (brass, steel). A 5-minute cycle is OK, but frequent repetition can damage the gold layer (after 100+ cycles). Rule: clean gold-plated jewelry every 2-3 months, not more often. For solid gold jewelry (8K, 14K, 18K, 22K) — no frequency limits.
