Seiko diver's watch in an ultrasonic cleaner basket + bottle of Vitaclean ultrasonic cleaner concentrate

Watches — water resistance is key

Cleaning a watch in an ultrasonic cleaner is the riskiest application among common items. The reason: if the watch is not sufficiently waterproof, water enters the mechanism = damage worth 200-2000 PLN depending on the brand.

One parameter determines everything: IP rating / ATM rating. Check it before the first cycle.

Checking water resistance — how to

On the watch case

Most watches have an inscription on the rim of the case back (where the snaps/screws are):

  • WATER RESISTANT or WR — minimum 3 ATM (30 m)
  • 5 ATM or 50M — swimming, shower ✅ ultrasonic
  • 10 ATM or 100M — recreational diving ✅
  • 20 ATM or 200M — professional diving ✅
  • DIVER'S 200M — ISO 6425 diver's standard ✅
  • No marking = NOT waterproof ❌

In the manual / online

Search the model in Google + "water resistance" or "IP rating". Apple Watch, Garmin, and Casio have this precisely documented.

Safety rule

If unsure, DO NOT use ultrasonic. It is better to skip than to damage a watch worth 2000 PLN.

Procedure — waterproof watch

What you need

  • Vitaclean ultrasonic cleaner concentrate — 15 ml (1 tablespoon)
  • Ultrasonic cleaner 600+ ml
  • Lukewarm water ~25-30°C (hot water can damage rubber seals)
  • Microfiber cloth

Procedure

  1. Remove the strap if it's leather or a replaceable silicone one (clean it separately)
  2. Pour into the cleaner 15 ml of Vitaclean ultrasonic cleaner concentrate + 600 ml of lukewarm water
  3. Place the watch in the basket (NOT on the bottom)
  4. Cycle 5-10 minutes
  5. After the cycle: rinse the watch under lukewarm running water for 10 seconds
  6. Dry gently with a microfiber cloth — wipe all crevices
  7. Check if the watch is working (second hand running normally, crown/buttons reacting)
  8. Reattach the strap (if it was separate)

Time: 8-12 minutes. Cost: under 0.60 PLN.

With caution

Model Class Notes
Apple Watch Series 1 IP67 3 min cycle, no more than once/month
Casio AQ (analog quartz basic) 3 ATM Short 3 min cycle, heavy use not recommended
Tag Heuer Aquaracer 30 ATM Safe, but expensive — prefer a jeweler

UNsafe (DO NOT use ultrasonic)

Model Class Reason
Swiss mechanical (Patek Philippe, Audemars Piguet, Vacheron) Usually 3 ATM or less Not airtight, sensitive movement
Antique / vintage (1950-1980) None / 3 ATM Old gaskets — not airtight
Pocket watches None Never water-resistant
Leather strap watches (entire unit) Leather ≠ water-resistant Remove the strap, clean watch separately
Smartwatches IP65 or lower < 1 m Not airtight

Special situations

Watch after long-term storage (vintage from a drawer)

Haven't used the watch for 5 years? Rubber gaskets may have dried out. Even if the watch was water-resistant, it may no longer be. Safe procedure:

  1. Replace gaskets at a watchmaker (£10-30 estimated)
  2. Water-resistance test (sometimes included in the price)
  3. Only then use the ultrasonic cleaner

Swiss mechanical watch (Rolex, Omega)

DO NOT use a home ultrasonic cleaner. Professional cleaning at a watchmaker:

  • Rolex general servicing: every 5-7 years
  • Omega servicing: every 5 years
  • Professional watchmaking ultrasonic cleaner uses specialized solutions (not Vitaclean ultrasonic cleaner concentrate) and different ultrasonic frequencies for specific movement parts

Smartwatch with health monitoring

Apple Watch, Garmin, Fitbit with biometric sensors (heart rate, ECG, SpO2). Sensors are under a water-resistant membrane; cavitation will not affect them. After a cycle, check if sensors are working normally (start a heart rate monitor).

Luxury steel bracelet (Rolex, Cartier)

Vitaclean ultrasonic cleaner concentrate is safe, but cavitation can loosen links (microscopic vibrations for 5+ minutes). For very valuable bracelets: use a watchmaker instead of a home cleaner.

Leather strap

REMOVE from the buckle before the cycle. Buckled straps — most watches allow this (steel buckle with a pin or micro-screw). Clean the strap separately:

  • Damp microfiber + neutral soap (e.g., Aleppo soap)
  • DO NOT soak the leather — it will swell and lose elasticity
  • After cleaning, air dry, do not use a radiator

Frequency

Everyday watch (sport/smartwatch)

  • Vitaclean ultrasonic cleaner concentrate cycle once every 1-2 months
  • Microfiber daily (after shower, after exercise)

Special occasion watch (weekly use)

  • Vitaclean ultrasonic cleaner concentrate cycle once every 6-12 months

Professional diving watch

  • Vitaclean ultrasonic cleaner concentrate cycle after each session (sea salt damages steel, even with titanium parts)
  • After a fresh-water rinse

Post-cycle — check

Crucially, check immediately after the cycle:

  1. Second hand moving normally (or screen turns on for digital)
  2. Crown turns smoothly
  3. Buttons respond
  4. Display clear with no signs of water under the glass
  5. Bracelet all links stable

If water is visible under the watch glass: IMMEDIATELY go to a watchmaker (~£20-60 drying service). Leaving water inside = movement corrosion.

Most common mistakes

3 ATM watch in ultrasonic — water will enter the movement. 3 ATM = protection against rain, NOT swimming or ultrasonic cleaners.

Leather strap in cleaner — leather deforms. Remove from buckle before cycle.

Full-strength Vitaclean ultrasonic cleaner concentrate — 1:40 dilution is mandatory.

30+ minute cycles — unnecessary for the movement; gaskets may fatigue from long vibration.

Skipping post-cycle check — you may miss water under the glass, and corrosion starts immediately.

Swiss mechanical in a home cleaner — damage can cost £200-1000 in Rolex/Omega service fees.

FAQ

Can I clean my watch in an ultrasonic cleaner? +

ONLY if water-resistant to at least 5 ATM (50 m) or IP67. Check the manual/case back. Safe: dive watches (Seiko Prospex, Citizen Promaster, Casio G-Shock), Apple Watch Series 2+, Garmin Fenix, Suunto. UNsafe: non-airtight Swiss mechanical watches, antiques, vintage mechanicals. Cycle 5-10 min, Vitaclean ultrasonic cleaner concentrate 1:40 dilution.

What do 5 ATM, 10 ATM, and IP67 mean? +

5 ATM = 50 meters = safe for swimming, showering, occasional diving (static water resistance). 10 ATM = 100 m = recreational diving (up to 30 m actual). 20 ATM = 200 m = professional diving. IP67 = 1 m water for 30 min (smartwatches). IP68 = over 1 m, time depends on manufacturer. For ultrasonic cleaners: 5 ATM or IP67 minimum.

Does a steel watch bracelet require a separate cycle? +

It does not. The entire watch (case + steel bracelet) can be cleaned together in a 5-10 minute cycle with Vitaclean ultrasonic cleaner concentrate. Stainless steel is safe. Plus, cavitation cleans micro-gaps in the bracelet links (where grease, dead skin, and sweat accumulate—impossible to clean with a sponge). After 6-12 months of daily wear, a bracelet looks like new after one cycle with Vitaclean ultrasonic cleaner concentrate.

What about a leather or silicone strap? +

Leather strap: DO NOT put in the ultrasonic cleaner—water penetrates and deforms the leather. Remove the strap from the buckle (most watches allow for replacement) and clean the watch without the strap. Clean the strap separately: damp microfiber cloth + neutral soap. Silicone strap (Apple Watch Sport, some Garmins): YES, you can put it in the ultrasonic cleaner; silicone is stable and can be cleaned together with the watch.

Can I use Vitaclean ultrasonic cleaner concentrate to clean a watch movement? +

NO—this is not the correct use. A mechanical watch movement (gears, springs, lubricating oils) requires specialized watchmaking fluid (Bergeon L&R, ESA Cleaner) and a professional watch cleaning machine (different ultrasonic frequency). Vitaclean ultrasonic cleaner concentrate is intended for external cleaning of the case and bracelet—not for an exposed movement. A movement requires a watchmaker (cleaning cost 200-500 PLN).

Smartwatch (Apple Watch / Garmin) — is it safe? +

Apple Watch Series 2 and newer have 5 ATM (50m water resistance)—YES in the ultrasonic cleaner. Series 1 (and older) had IP67—YES with caution (shorter 3-minute cycle). Apple Watch SE—5 ATM. Garmin Fenix—10 ATM, safe. Garmin Forerunner—check the specific model (5 ATM is standard in newer ones). Use a 5-minute cycle with Vitaclean ultrasonic cleaner concentrate at a 1:40 dilution. After the cycle, turn on the smartwatch to check if it is functioning normally.

What if the watch is not water-resistant? +

External cleaning only with a damp microfiber cloth. Classic mechanical, vintage, and pocket watches: no ATM rating = DO NOT put in water. Extreme cleaning: see a watchmaker (they disassemble and clean the movement in a special machine). Cost 100-300 PLN depending on the brand. For daily hygiene: microfiber on the case + bracelet separately (if it is a detachable steel one).
