Coffee machine with pink solution before the cycle and yellow solution after the descaling cycle – color indicator shows effectiveness

Color indicator – Your clear control

Most descaling methods leave the user wondering "did it work?". The color indicator in the Vitaclean descaler (pink → yellow) provides a clear answer:

  • Pink after the cycle = the solution still has power, you can reuse it for a second appliance
  • Yellow after the cycle = the solution is saturated with dissolved limescale, action complete, pour it out

6 signals of a successful cycle

1. Water heating time decreases by 25-35%

Before descaling, the machine takes 25-30 seconds to heat 200 ml of water (a typical espresso). After a successful cycle: 15-20 seconds. Measure it with a stopwatch before and after – it’s a concrete metric.

2. The espresso stream becomes consistent

Before: dotted, jerky, sometimes intermittent or very thin
After: continuous, slightly spiraled (like flowing honey), with even flow

In portafilter machines: the extraction time for 25 g of espresso should be stable at around 25-30 seconds (a proper "shot"). Before descaling, it is often 35-45 sec or 15-20 sec (the channel flows incorrectly).

3. The pump runs quieter

Limescale buildup in the tubes increases the pressure the pump must overcome. This can be heard as a louder "growl" or vibration. After the cycle, the pump returns to its factory-quiet operation – a soft sound, no vibrations.

4. The "descale" message disappears from the display

In 95% of models, this happens automatically after the rinse cycle. If it remains, check the reset section below.

5. The color indicator of the solution changes color

The clearest signal if you are using the Vitaclean descaler:

  • Pink at the beginning, pink at the end → the solution had too little active ingredient or the machine had little limescale
  • Pink at the beginning, yellow at the end of the cycle → the solution used its active ingredient, limescale was dissolved
  • Yellow halfway through the cycle → a lot of limescale in the circuit (neglected descaling), repeat the cycle with a second portion of Vitaclean descaler

6. The coffee taste returns to normal

Discard the first espresso after the cycle (it may have a trace aftertaste). The second should be normal – full flavor, no metallic aftertaste, crema thicker and more durable.

What to do if the cycle didn't work

Espresso stream still weak

Diagnosis: was the color indicator pink or yellow?

  • Pink solution → cycle too weak. Repeat with 150 ml instead of 100 ml of concentrate, longer time (45 min instead of 30)
  • Yellow solution, stream still weak → limescale was not the main problem. Check:
    • Spout (clogged with coffee grounds → soak in Vitaclean descaler 1:4 for 15 min)
    • Carbon filter (if not replaced >2 months, it blocks flow → replace)
    • Pump (loud, weak during a test espresso without coffee → service)

"Descale" message does not disappear

Reset by brand:

  • DeLonghi: Menu (gear icon) → Maintenance → Descale → hold OK for 5 seconds → Reset
  • Krups: hold on/off + steam buttons simultaneously for 3 seconds → "CL" message
  • Philips/Saeco: Menu → Maintenance → CALC & CLEAN → Reset Counter
  • Siemens: Settings → Care → confirm "Descaling completed"

If the reset doesn't work: the cycle was interrupted halfway through. Start the descaling program from the beginning, complete it fully with full rinse cycles, and the reset will be automatic.

First, second, third coffee has an aftertaste

Diagnosis: not enough rinse cycles.

  • Standard: 2 rinse cycles after the descaling cycle
  • If there is an intense aftertaste: add a third cycle of clean water, run through the machine without coffee
  • If the aftertaste remains after 5 rinse cycles: you likely didn't skip the step of removing the solution from the tank before switching to coffee mode – remove the tank, fill with CLEAN water, brew 1 espresso without coffee

Machine still leaking after the cycle

Diagnosis: silicone seal has lost elasticity (dry silicone after a long lack of acid use) or is worn out.

  • Dry silicone: give the machine 24 hours of normal operation (5-7 espressos throughout the day) – the silicone "swells" under the influence of heat and steam, and leaks stop
  • Worn seal: after 24 hours leaks persist → replacement at a service center

Comparison: machine state before vs after the cycle

Metric Before the cycle After a successful cycle
Heating time for 200 ml water 25-30 seconds 15-20 seconds
Extraction time for 25 g espresso 35-45 or 15-20 sec 25-30 seconds
Pump noise Average with vibrations Quiet, stable
"Descaling" message Active Cleared
Espresso stream Dotted or jerky Continuous, slightly spiraled
Coffee taste Metallic, aroma-less Full flavor
Crema on espresso Thin, dissipates quickly Thick, lasts 30+ sec

Long-term indicators (after 2-3 weeks)

A single descaling cycle affects the machine's operation for 2-3 weeks. After this time:

  • Hard water: limescale begins to build up again. The heating time increases again from 15 sec to 18-20 sec
  • With softening filter: buildup rate is 60-80% slower – the machine runs clean for 8-12 weeks
  • With filtered water + tank filter: for 4-5 months without limescale symptoms

Frequently asked questions

How to tell if descaling worked? +

Six signals: (1) the machine heats water faster (15-20 sec vs previous 25-30), (2) the espresso stream is steady and louder, (3) the "descale" message disappears from the display, (4) the Vitaclean descaler solution color indicator changes from pink → yellow, (5) the second espresso after the cycle tastes normal, (6) pump noise returns to normal (quieter operation).

What does it mean if the descaler solution remains pink? +

Pink after a cycle = the solution did not use up its active ingredient. Two possible interpretations: (1) concentration too weak – dosing was lower than recommended (Vitaclean descaler standard is 1:4 for a coffee machine, 1:10 for a kettle), (2) the machine had little limescale to dissolve. Pink after a cycle in a new machine = everything is OK. Pink after a cycle in a 6-month-old machine that was never descaled before = the cycle was too weak, repeat with a higher concentration.

The espresso stream is still weak after descaling – what to do? +

Three most common causes: (1) the dispensing nozzle is clogged with coffee grounds (not limescale) – remove the nozzle, soak in Vitaclean descaler 1:4 for 15 minutes, rinse, (2) worn pump seal – for an old machine before replacing the seal, check with a service center, (3) insufficient descaler concentration – repeat the cycle with 150 ml instead of 100 ml. Also check the pump pressure in the specifications – if you notice a drop from the factory 9 bar to 6-7, that is a different matter.

The first coffee after descaling has an aftertaste – is that normal? +

Yes, the first coffee may have a trace of a metallic/citric aftertaste from solution residues in the circuit. Pour it out and brew a second one – it should be normal. If the aftertaste persists in 3 consecutive espressos, there weren't enough rinsing cycles – run another 1-2 tanks of clean water through the machine. After 5 rinsing cycles, the aftertaste must disappear.

The "descale" message does not disappear – what to do? +

Reset is usually automatic after the rinsing cycle in modern machines. If the message remains: (1) DeLonghi: Menu → Maintenance → Descaling → hold OK for 5s, (2) Krups: hold on/off + steam for 3s, (3) Philips: Menu → Maintenance → Reset Counter, (4) Siemens: Settings → Care → Confirm Descaling Done. If reset does not work: the cycle was interrupted halfway – start it again from the beginning.

Can I use the same solution dosage for a second machine? +

Yes, if the solution remains pink (active) after the first cycle. The color indicator in Vitaclean descaler (pink → yellow) shows exactly how much active ingredient is left. Pink after the first cycle = you can pour it into a second machine (or kettle) for a second cycle without buying a new preparation. This is a real 50% saving. Check the color again after the second cycle – yellow means it is used up, pour it out.
