Aftertaste after descaling – a problem solvable in 95% of cases
The most frustrating moment: you've completed the descaling cycle according to the instructions, you brew the first espresso after it – and the coffee tastes sour, metallic, or bitter. This is normal and fixable in almost every case. Most users solve this in 2-3 minutes (add rinse cycles), others in 30 minutes (resolve the specific cause).
This article provides a precise diagnosis: 6 causes and how to fix each one.
Why does an aftertaste appear
The coffee machine has a heating circuit with a capacity of 150-300 ml of internal pipes + the pressure tank. After the descaling cycle:
- ~30-50 ml of solution remains in the circuit (residue in the pipes, heater, nozzle)
- Standard 2 rinse cycles (600-900 ml each) clean ~95% of the circuit
- The remaining 5% is the substance adsorbed on the internal pipe walls and silicone seals
This residue gradually "releases" into the brewing water in the first 2-5 espressos after the cycle. Hence the aftertaste.
6 causes of the aftertaste + solutions
Cause 1: Insufficient rinse cycles (most common, 70% of cases)
Diagnosis: the aftertaste persists from the 1st to the 3rd espresso after the cycle
Solution:
- Turn off the machine
- Remove the water tank, rinse it, fill it with CLEAN water
- Run another 2 rinse cycles of clean water through the machine (without coffee, in hot water mode or as an espresso with an empty filter)
- Check the taste again
In 95% of cases, after 5 total cycles (2 standard + 3 additional), the problem disappears.
Cause 2: Missed step of removing the solution from the tank (15% of cases)
Diagnosis: strong, clear aftertaste, as if the acid were still active
Some users do not replace the water in the tank before the rinse cycle – the machine pumps remnants of the solution as a "rinse," which obviously doesn't work. The "add water" message appears, but it automatically refills from the TANK, which still contains the solution.
Solution:
- Turn off the machine
- Physically remove the tank, rinse under running water, and visually check that no pink residue remains
- Fill with CLEAN water to the max line
- Reinsert
- Run 3 rinse cycles
- Test with the first coffee
Cause 3: Too strong a solution concentration (10% of cases)
Diagnosis: concentration higher than 1:4 (e.g., 200 ml of Vitaclean descaler + 500 ml of water instead of 125 ml + 500 ml)
Solution:
- 5-7 rinse cycles instead of 2
- 24 hours of normal operation with clean water before going back to making coffee
- For the next cycle, stick to the recommended 1:4 dosage
Cause 4: Vinegar instead of professional descaler (5% of cases)
Diagnosis: smell of vinegar in the coffee + taste
Solution:
- 7-10 rinse cycles (vinegar is harder to rinse out than Vitaclean descaler)
- Afterward: 24h break without brewing coffee
- For the next cycle, consider professional Vitaclean descaler instead of vinegar (vinegar vs descaler)
Cause 5: Seal absorbed the acid (rare, <5%)
Diagnosis: aftertaste persists for 24-48h after all rinse cycles
Silicone in some models (especially older coffee machines) has a porous structure – it can absorb trace amounts of acid and slowly "release" them.
Solution:
- 24h of normal machine operation (5-7 espressos with clean water)
- The silicone returns to thermal equilibrium and stops releasing acid
- If the problem persists after 24h: service (the seal requires replacement, ~150-300 PLN)
Cause 6: Filter with descaler residue (rare, <2%)
Diagnosis: carbon filter in the tank was NOT removed before the cycle
The carbon filter adsorbs the active ingredient of the descaler, but during the cycle, it can also absorb some of the acid. After the cycle, when the filter is "saturated" with acid, it gradually releases it into the water in the tank through subsequent espressos.
Solution:
- Remove the filter
- Replace with a new one (a filter after a descaling cycle is compromised)
- Run 2 rinse cycles without the filter
- Insert a new filter
How long does the aftertaste last – timeline
| Situation | Aftertaste duration | Rinse cycles needed |
|---|---|---|
| Standard Vitaclean descaling cycle | 1 espresso (first one, poured out) | 2 cycles (standard) |
| Vitaclean descaler, stronger 1:3 concentration | 2-3 espressos | 3-4 cycles |
| Vitaclean descaler + missed rinse cycle | 4-6 espressos | 5-6 cycles (additional) |
| Vinegar 8% standard | 5-7 espressos | 5-7 cycles |
| Vinegar 8% undiluted | 10-15 espressos | 8-10 cycles + 24h break |
| Missed filter, Vitaclean descaler | 3-5 espressos | 4 cycles + filter replacement |
Common rinsing mistakes
Skipping the last cycle "because it tastes OK" – the first espresso after 2 cycles may taste fine, but the aftertaste can return in the 5th or 7th (not everything was flushed out). For certainty, ALWAYS perform 2 cycles, and afterwards, run 1 espresso cycle without coffee.
Rinsing with the filter in the tank – if you left the filter in during descaling, remove it before the rinse cycles. Otherwise, the filter acts as a reservoir for residue.
Short rinse cycles – manually pouring out half the tank "because it's faster" instead of using the full automatic cycles. A full cycle of hot water through all pipes = a full rinse.
Brewing coffee instead of running clean water – if you are already rinsing with coffee, the grounds can clog the nozzle and the aftertaste will linger. Always run 2-3 cycles of CLEAN water without coffee first, and only then make your first coffee.
Prevention – how to avoid an aftertaste in the future
- Professional Vitaclean descaler instead of vinegar (2-3 rinse cycles vs 5-7)
- Stick to the 1:4 dilution ratio – do not make it stronger "just to be sure"
- Perform 2 full rinse cycles as a routine, even if the machine doesn't require it
- Replace the water tank BEFORE the rinse cycles (the most common mistake)
- Discard the first espresso as a standard – it is not a sign of a problem, it is normal practice

Frequently asked questions
Why does the first coffee after descaling have an aftertaste? +
Residues of the descaling solution in the machine's circuit (pipes, heater, spout) alter the pH of the brewing water. The optimal pH for espresso is 5.0–5.5; acid residues lower the pH to 4.0–4.5, making the coffee taste sour or metallic. ALWAYS discard the first espresso after a cycle; the second one should taste normal. If the second one still has an aftertaste, more rinse cycles are needed.
How many rinse cycles are needed after descaling? +
The standard is 2 cycles (approx. 5 minutes each) – the machine pumps 2 full tanks of clean water through the heating circuit. Most machines (DeLonghi, Philips, Krups, Siemens) automatically perform 2 cycles after the descaling cycle. If an aftertaste persists, run a 3rd to 5th cycle with clean water. After 5 cycles, the problem disappears in 95% of cases.
Is the aftertaste after descaling harmful? +
No, but it is unpleasant. Residuals of Vitaclean descaler (amidosulfonic acid + citric acid) are fully biodegradable and are not toxic at the concentrations found after a rinse cycle. Vinegar residues are neutral (acetic acid is a component of wine vinegar, used in food). The problem is solely the taste – the coffee becomes bitter, sour, or metallic. Discard the first coffee and try the second.
What to do if the aftertaste persists after 5+ rinse cycles? +
Three possible reasons: (1) you skipped the step of removing the solution from the tank before switching to coffee mode – remove the tank, rinse it, fill it with CLEAN water, and run 1 espresso without coffee; (2) the silicone seal has absorbed the acid and is "releasing" it over several hours/days – use the machine intensively for 24h (5-7 espressos with clean water); (3) too aggressive solution concentration (e.g., undiluted 8% vinegar) – in this case, even 10 rinse cycles might not be enough; give the machine a 48-72h break.
Why do I need to rinse more after vinegar than after a professional descaler? +
Vinegar leaves a strong odor that lingers in the circuit for 5-7 rinse cycles. Professional Vitaclean descaler has a neutral aroma (slightly lemony) and is easier to rinse out completely – 2-3 cycles are sufficient. Plus: Vitaclean descaler contains corrosion inhibitors that protect silicone seals – fewer residues are absorbed by rubber components. The momentary "saving" of using vinegar is offset by the longer rinsing time required.
Can I avoid an aftertaste after descaling? +
Partially – stick to 4 rules: (1) use a professional descaler instead of vinegar (Vitaclean descaler = 2-3 rinse cycles instead of 5-7), (2) keep the 1:4 ratio (do not make it stronger), (3) after the descaling cycle, ensure a MINIMUM of 2 rinse cycles (even if the machine doesn't ask for them), (4) discard the first espresso after the cycle as a routine. With these 4 rules, the aftertaste does not appear in 90% of cases.
