Disassembled P-trap under the kitchen sink with a bucket underneath + Vitaclean pipe cleaner — cleaning process

The P-trap — the invisible guardian of your kitchen and bathroom

The P-trap is a U-shaped pipe under a sink, bathtub, shower, or washbasin. It serves 2 functions:

  1. Catches foreign objects — everything that falls into the drain (rings, floss, small caps) ends up in the U-bend and doesn't go further into the sewer system
  2. Gas barrier — the water in the P-trap blocks sewer gases from entering the apartment (hydrogen sulfide, ammonia)

Most P-traps have plastic threads that are interchangeable without tools — they can be unscrewed by hand in 30 seconds. Therefore, cleaning the P-trap is the cheapest DIY task at home when the Vitaclean pipe cleaner isn't enough.

When it makes sense to clean the P-trap

Situations when the P-trap IS the culprit

  1. Vitaclean pipe cleaner didn't help after 2 cycles (60 min each) — the chemical dissolved what it could, but there is a physical foreign object or a very compact clog in the P-trap
  2. An object fell in that you want to recover (ring, jewelry) — it's faster to disassemble the P-trap than to wait for the object to dissolve (which it never will)
  3. Long-term clog (>3 years) — biofilm and grease packed into a hard mass require mechanical removal
  4. Leaks under the sink/tub — the P-trap gaskets need replacing, disassembly is necessary

Situations when the P-trap is NOT the culprit (Vitaclean pipe cleaner is enough)

  1. Fresh clog (1-12 months) — Vitaclean pipe cleaner 30-minute cycle, the clog is likely in pipes deeper than the P-trap
  2. Standing water (when Vitaclean pipe cleaner hasn't been tried yet) — Vitaclean pipe cleaner first, only try the P-trap after 2 cycles
  3. Odors (without a physical clog) — biofilm in pipes deeper than the P-trap, use Vitaclean pipe cleaner + baking soda
  4. Slow drainage — preventative Vitaclean pipe cleaner + observation

Rule: Vitaclean pipe cleaner → second Vitaclean pipe cleaner cycle → mechanical P-trap cleaning. In that order.

P-trap cleaning procedure — 15 minutes

What you need

  • Bucket or basin (4-5 L) — for under the P-trap
  • Old towels or newspapers — under the bucket (in case of leaks)
  • Rubber gloves
  • Brush (e.g., a toothbrush or small cleaning brush)
  • Vitaclean pipe cleaner — 50-100 ml for the P-trap internal cycle
  • Pipe wrench or adjustable wrench (only for very old metal P-traps >20 years old)

Step 1: Preparation (5 min)

  1. Put on rubber gloves
  2. Place the bucket under the P-trap — it will collect residual water (~500 ml) + foreign objects + clogs
  3. Lay down old towels around the bucket on the floor (just in case)
  4. Turn off the water supply to the sink (close the tap at the top, if the sink has separate valves)
  5. Check the P-trap type:
    • PVC with plastic threads (95% of modern ones): no tools needed
    • Metal with older threads: pipe wrench

Step 2: Disassembling the P-trap (5 min)

PVC P-trap (plastic)

  1. Grip the nut at the bottom of the P-trap (where the U-bend meets the horizontal pipe)
  2. Turn by hand counter-clockwise (like opening a jar)
  3. After 2-3 turns, the nut will come off completely — move the bucket under the falling water (usually ~500 ml)
  4. Remove the U-shaped part of the P-trap — it is now free
  5. Check the contents — usually: water + small debris + possibly a foreign object

Metal P-trap (rare, in older homes)

  1. Pipe wrench on the nut (grip firmly but do not squeeze too hard)
  2. Turn counter-clockwise — some old P-traps are seized and require strong torque
  3. Remove the U-part
  4. IMPORTANT: older metal can be corroded at the threads — if it won't unscrew, DO NOT force it — you could permanently damage the threads

Step 3: Cleaning the inside of the P-trap (5 min)

  1. Remove foreign objects from inside the P-trap — with tweezers or gloved fingers
  2. Wipe the inside with a brush (e.g., a toothbrush for small P-traps, a kitchen brush for larger ones)
  3. Vitaclean pipe cleaner cycle:
    • Pour 100 ml Vitaclean pipe cleaner + 500 ml hot water into the disassembled P-trap (place it in a basin)
    • Leave for 15 minutes — Vitaclean pipe cleaner dissolves biofilm + clogs from every crevice
    • Rinse under the tap with hot water for 1-2 minutes
  4. Visually inspect whether the inside is clean (smooth, without a caked-on layer)

Step 4: Reassembling the P-trap (3 min)

  1. Check the silicone gaskets — ensure they are present and undamaged (at every connection)
  2. Lubricate the gaskets with petroleum jelly or plumbing silicone (if old/dry)
  3. Put the P-trap back in place, tighten the nut by hand clockwise
  4. DO NOT tighten with a wrench — over-tightening cracks the gasket

Step 5: Leak test (2 min)

  1. Turn on the water in the sink at low pressure for 2 minutes
  2. Check under the P-trap — ensure there are no leaks
  3. If there is a leak: unscrew, check the gasket, and tighten again
  4. If OK: increase water flow to full for 30 seconds, then check for leaks one more time
  5. If still OK: cleaning is complete, store the bucket

Types of P-traps + notes

Kitchen sink P-trap

  • Standard: PVC, plastic threads, U-shaped
  • Brands: Geberit, Wirquin, Viega, generic
  • Durability: 20+ years
  • Cleaning: 15 min standard

Bathtub P-trap

  • Slightly more complex — often has an additional element connecting the overflow to the drain
  • Brands: Roca, Geberit, Wirquin
  • Cleaning: 20-30 min (more connections)

Washbasin P-trap

  • Smallest — often a bottle-shaped pipe (bottle trap) instead of a U-shape
  • Brands: Geberit, Wirquin, Roca
  • Cleaning: 10 min (small sizes)

Pet sink siphon (washbasin)

  • In some multi-pet households, the pet sink has a special siphon with an additional filter
  • Weekly cleaning (accumulates hair + food faster than human waste)

Shower tray siphon

  • Low profile (little space under the tray) — sometimes requires unscrewing from the top through the drain grate
  • Cleaning: 20-30 min (harder access)

Safety and leaks

What to do if the siphon leaks after assembly

  1. Check the silicone gaskets — the most common cause (50% of cases)
  2. Replace the gaskets if old/cracked — ~5-15 PLN per set, available at Castorama, OBI
  3. Check the threads — whether they are cracked (rare, but possible)
  4. Lubricate the gaskets with silicone plumbing grease (~15 PLN per tube, for 50+ uses)
  5. Tighten firmly by hand, but without a wrench

Very old siphons (>30 years)

Old metal siphons may be corroded at the threads:

  • Try WD-40 or a special rust loosener (~30 PLN)
  • Never jerk — you could crack the thread and require a full siphon replacement
  • If it won't unscrew: plumber (~100-200 PLN)
  • After replacement: a new PVC siphon (50-100 PLN) lasts for another 20+ years

Comparison: Vitaclean pipe unclogger cycle vs. DIY siphon

Dimension Vitaclean pipe unclogger 30 min cycle DIY Siphon 15 min
Effectiveness (minor clog) high high
Effectiveness (long-term) good very high
Effectiveness (foreign object) 0% (Vitaclean pipe unclogger won't dissolve metal) 100%
Time 30 min 15 min
Cost below 15 PLN (Vitaclean pipe unclogger) 0 PLN (you already have the Vitaclean pipe unclogger)
Requires skill NO a bit (DIY basic level)
Risk (post-leak) ~0% 5% (gaskets)

Combination: Vitaclean pipe unclogger cycle + DIY siphon = an effective solution for even very difficult clogs, for less than 15 PLN and 45 minutes.

Most common mistakes

Skipping the bucket under the siphon — water + siphon contents flood the cabinet under the sink, potential furniture damage (~50-200 PLN).

Tightening with a wrench — cracks the silicone gasket, causes leaks. Always by hand.

Skipping the gasket check — assembling the siphon without checking the gaskets = 50% chance of a leak.

Wiping the siphon with toilet paper — the paper disintegrates in the wet interior, adds residue. Use a brush (toothbrush for small siphons).

Vitaclean pipe unclogger poured outside the siphon (during disassembly) — won't reach the inside of the clog. Procedure: Vitaclean pipe unclogger inside the disassembled siphon, in a bowl.

Signs the siphon needs replacement

  • ❌ Housing crack (from freezing in the basement or impact)
  • ❌ Unstoppable leaks despite changing the gaskets
  • ❌ Corroded threads in older metal ones
  • ❌ No available gaskets for a very old model

PVC siphon replacement: 30-80 PLN, 30 minutes DIY (or plumber 100 PLN).

Frequently Asked Questions

How to clean a siphon under the sink? +

(1) Place a bucket under the siphon (collects residual water and whatever falls out), (2) Manually unscrew the nut from the bottom of the siphon (most models have plastic threads that don't require tools) — counterclockwise, (3) Pull out the U-shaped part of the siphon, (4) Wipe the interior with a brush or cloth + Vitaclean pipe unclogger (50 ml + 100 ml of water, 5 minutes), (5) Rinse under the tap, (6) Reassemble clockwise, tighten by hand. Time: 15 minutes.

When should the siphon be removed instead of just pouring in the Vitaclean pipe unclogger? +

Four situations: (1) Vitaclean pipe unclogger didn't help after 2 cycles (60 min each) — the clog might be inside the siphon itself, (2) Foreign object in the siphon (ring, toothpicks, small bones) — Vitaclean pipe unclogger will not dissolve hard objects, (3) Long-term clog (>3 years without preventive care) — biofilm compacted into a mass, (4) Six-month prevention — preventive cleaning + Vitaclean pipe unclogger cycle, prevents permanent biofilm.

Does the siphon leak after reassembly? +

Sometimes YES — after tightening again, the silicone gasket might be improperly seated. Repair: (1) Check the gaskets — check if they are present (every siphon connection has a silicone gasket), (2) Lubricate the gaskets with petroleum jelly or silicone plumbing grease (not water — gaskets are dry after removal) — helps with proper seating, (3) Tighten by hand, NOT with a wrench — excessive tightening cracks the gasket, (4) Run water for 2 minutes, check for leaks. If it leaks: unscrew, check the gaskets, reassemble.

Can I use the Vitaclean pipe unclogger on a disassembled siphon? +

YES, it is even recommended for deep disinfection. Procedure: (1) Place the disassembled siphon in a bowl over the sink, (2) Pour in 100 ml of Vitaclean pipe unclogger + 500 ml of hot water (ratio 1:5 — stronger than preventive maintenance), (3) Leave for 15 minutes — Vitaclean pipe unclogger reaches every crevice, (4) Rinse under hot water, (5) Assemble. Vs pouring into an installed siphon: Vitaclean pipe unclogger exposes all internal walls (water poured into an installed siphon only reaches the bottom).

What can I find in a siphon? +

The siphon catches everything that falls into the sink/drain and is too heavy to wash away. Common finds: (1) Rings, earrings (most common — 40% of all finds), (2) Baby teeth (15%), (3) Small nuts, screws (10%), (4) Thumbtacks, paperclips (5%), (5) Small bones (from the kitchen, 5%), (6) Hair + soap clumped into a mass (25% — this is a typical clog).

Does the siphon need to be replaced? +

Rarely — a typical siphon (PVC, plastic threads) lasts 20+ years. Replace it when: (1) Housing crack (from freezing or impact), (2) Persistent leaks despite replacing seals, (3) Corroded threads in older metal siphons (>30 years). Cost of a new PVC siphon: 30-80 PLN (sink), 50-150 PLN (bathtub), 80-200 PLN (premium Geberit/Wirquin). Replacement: 30 minutes DIY.

Is the dishwasher siphon cleaned the same way? +

Dishwashers have a built-in filter inside (NOT a siphon in the classic sense). Procedure: (1) Remove the filter (usually by turning it counter-clockwise) — mesh + fine, (2) Rinse under the tap + 50 ml Vitaclean pipe cleaner + 100 ml water for 5 minutes + rinse, (3) Put it back. Plus: run a Vitaclean pipe cleaner cycle in an empty dishwasher (50 ml directly into the bottom) once every 3 months. Full dishwasher guide: details about dishwashers: Appliance Descaling.
