Streaks after robot mopping - a common problem only visible at an angle
After the first cycle with a robot mop, you lie on the floor, shine a flashlight at a 45° angle, and see it: long, parallel streaks in the direction of the robot's movement. From a normal perspective, the floor looks fine, but in backlighting from the sun, it's obvious.
This is 80% a problem of the detergent or the pads, not the robot. The robot only applies what you put in the tank - if the detergent is wrong or the pads are too wet, streaks are inevitable.
8 causes of streaks and how to fix them
Cause 1: Too much detergent (35% of cases)
Diagnosis: streaks visible immediately after the cycle, the floor is slightly sticky
Solution:
- Drain ALL detergent from the tank
- Refill with a 15 ml Vitaclean concentrate + 300 ml water (1:20) ratio — exact table per robot model: how much ml of concentrate per tank
- Run 1 mopping cycle on the previous area
- The streaks should disappear
Cause 2: Wet pads (25% of cases)
Diagnosis: water marks in the direction of the robot's movement, slippery surface after drying
Microfiber pads must be washed and WRUNG OUT before inserting them. Straight from the washing machine, they are too wet.
Solution:
- After washing, wring out the pads by hand (or in a spin-dryer)
- They should be damp, NOT wet - test: there should be maybe 5-10 ml of water in 1 pad, no more
- Insert into the robot - the robot adds water from the tank, so the initial dampness of the pad must be minimal
Cause 3: Ordinary floor cleaner (15% of cases)
Diagnosis: streaks + stickiness + foam around the robot while it works
Cif, Pronto, Domestos leave a layer - the reasons are technical. Four specific consequences and repair instructions: what happens when you pour ordinary floor cleaner into a robot.
Solution:
- Empty the tank, rinse with water
- Pour in Vitaclean (15 ml + 300 ml of water)
- Run 1 cycle on the area with streaks (clean water for the previous cycle if it was with Cif - to rinse out residues)
Cause 4: Hard water (10% of cases)
Diagnosis: whitish marks (not directional), visible on dark panels
Solution:
- Filtered water (Brita / Aquaphor jug) - hardness 2-5 dGH instead of 12-18
- OR increase the dose of Vitaclean by 5 ml (20 ml instead of 15 per 300 ml of water) - surfactants bind minerals
- Descale the robot tank once every 2-3 months (50 ml Vitaclean + water, run mopping of an empty kitchen for 5 min, rinse)
Cause 5: Unwashed pads (8% of cases)
Diagnosis: dark streaks, the robot is "applying" dirt to the floor
Microfiber pads absorb dust in cycles - after 5-10 cycles, they are so saturated that they return the dirt back to the floor.
Solution:
- Wash once a week in the washing machine (30°C, short cycle)
- No fabric softener - softener covers the microfiber with a layer that reduces absorbency
- Drying - air dry or tumble dry on low heat
- Replace pads every 6-12 months (after ~300 cycles, microfiber loses absorbency)
Cause 6: Clogged nozzle (4% of cases)
Diagnosis: streaks only on one side of the floor, one pad dry, the other wet
Solution: Remove the nozzle, soak in Vitaclean 1:5 for 15 minutes, rinse, and put it back. Details: Robot mopping detergent - section about the dosing nozzle.
Cause 7: Water too cold (2% of cases)
Diagnosis: streaks in rooms with a temperature <18°C
Cold water evaporates more slowly. Surfactants are less active.
Solution:
- Fill the tank with lukewarm water 20-25°C ("warm" from the tap for 30 seconds)
- Turn up the heating in the room by 1°C while mopping
- In cool rooms during winter (e.g., unused bedrooms): mop less frequently, by hand instead of the robot
Cause 8: Robot mode too fast (1% of cases)
Diagnosis: streaks only in one direction, the robot is "flying" over the floor
In the Mi Home (Xiaomi), Roborock, or iRobot app, set:
- "Intensive" mode - the robot works 30% slower, more passes over the same area
- "Heavy soiling" mode for heavily soiled surfaces - even slower, higher water doses
How to remove existing streaks
Fresh streaks (up to 24h after mopping)
Time: 15 minutes, cost: 0 PLN (with available materials)
- Damp microfiber (wrung out well) + 5 ml of Vitaclean concentrate + 100 ml of water in a spray bottle
- Spray the streaks from a distance of 30 cm (light mist, do not flood)
- Wipe in the opposite direction of the robot's movement (cross the streaks)
- Leave to dry (5-10 minutes)
- Check at an angle - if they remain, do it a second time from a distance of 50 cm
Old streaks (>24h)
Time: 30 minutes
- Run the robot with CLEAN water (no detergent) on the area with streaks - 1 cycle
- After drying: second cycle with Vitaclean 1:20 (15 ml + 300 ml of water)
- After drying, check at an angle
- If they remain - check if the pads are freshly washed; if not, insert clean ones and repeat cycle 2
Very old streaks (layered, sticky)
Time: 60 minutes
- Robot with Vitaclean 1:5 (50 ml per 300 ml of water) - stronger concentration to dissolve the layer. One-time only!
- After the cycle: robot with clean water - 1 rinsing cycle
- After the cycle: standard Vitaclean 1:20 cycle
- Layered streaks typically require only 1 such cycle, after which normal 1:20 maintenance is sufficient
Prevention - to keep streaks from coming back
- Stick to 15 ml + 300 ml of water (1:20) - no more, no less
- Wash pads weekly (30°C, no softener)
- Replace pads every 6-12 months (microfiber wears out)
- Filtered water in the tank (Brita jug) - eliminates 60-80% of hardness
- Empty the tank after every mopping - standing water ferments
- Clean the tank once every 2-3 months (50 ml Vitaclean + water, empty kitchen cycle)
- Lukewarm water 20-25°C - evaporates evenly

Frequently Asked Questions
Why does my robot mop leave streaks on laminate flooring? +
The eight most common causes: (1) too much detergent in the tank (>20 ml per 300 ml of water = 1:15 instead of 1:20), (2) wet mop pads - wring them out before placing them in the robot, (3) regular floor cleaner producing too much foam, (4) hard water (mineral deposits left behind after drying), (5) dirty or unwashed pads, (6) clogged dispensing nozzle, (7) water too cold (<20°C, dries more slowly), (8) robot mode too fast (surface does not have time to dry).
How to remove streaks left by a robot mop? +
Fresh streaks (up to 24h): wipe with a damp microfiber cloth and 5 ml of Vitaclean concentrate + 100 ml of water - takes 15 minutes. Old streaks (>24h): run the robot with CLEAR water (no cleaner) for 1 cycle, then a normal Vitaclean 1:20 cycle. Time: 30 min. After the cycle, check the floor - if streaks are still visible, check if the pads are clean (machine wash at 30°C).
Do robot streaks only appear on laminate flooring? +
Usually yes, because laminate reflects light, making streaks visible from an angle. However, similar marks can appear on: (1) vinyl (LVT, PVC) - whitish streaks from hard water, (2) matte tiles (alkaline cleaner leaving a layer), (3) lacquered parquet (streak marks from water run-off). Glossy tiles and stone - rarely.
Does hard water cause streaks from robot mops? +
Yes, in 30-40% of streak cases. Hard water (>12 dGH) leaves behind minerals upon drying - white streaks visible especially on dark floors. Solution: fill the tank with filtered water (Brita jug ~70 PLN, filter ~25 PLN / 2 months) or distilled water. Alternative: increase the Vitaclean dosage by 5 ml (up to 20 ml per 300 ml of water) - the surfactants will bind the minerals.
The robot leaves streaks only on one side of the floor - what to do? +
Clogged or asymmetrically working dispensing nozzle. Diagnosis: touch both sides of the mop pad under the robot - if one side is dry and the other wet, the nozzle is clogged. Solution: (1) remove the pad, check the nozzle under it, (2) soak the nozzle (or the relevant filter) in hot water with Vitaclean (1:5) for 15 minutes, (3) rinse under running water, (4) put it back. In 80% of cases, the problem disappears.
Could streaks mean the floor is damaged? +
In 95% of cases - no. Streaks are a layer on the surface that can be removed. However: if the streaks do not disappear even after rinsing and wiping with a microfiber cloth, inspect the floor closely - if you see scratches (white lines in the floor, not on it), the surface coating has been damaged (a hard object left a scratch). In that case, mopping won't help. In other cases, streaks are the fault of the cleaner, the pad, or the water, not the floor itself.
