Drain odor — gas-producing bacteria
A foul or sour smell from the drain comes from biofilm bacteria. Biofilm is a slippery layer of microorganisms on the pipe walls that accumulates where organic waste (grease, soap, hair) is present.
Bacteria in the biofilm produce 3 types of odors:
- Hydrogen sulfide (H₂S) — "rotten egg" smell, typical
- Ammonia — "urine" smell, occurs with changes in pipe temperature
- Volatile organic acids — "sour" smell, typical of milk-grease biofilm
Vitaclean pipe cleaner (NaOH 25-30%) chemically dissolves the biofilm = bacteria lose their habitat = odor disappears permanently.
Procedure — Vitaclean pipe cleaner + baking soda
What you need
- Vitaclean pipe cleaner — 200 ml per cycle
- Baking soda (NaHCO₃) — 5 tablespoons
- Hot water — 200 ml + 10 L for flushing
- Protective gloves
- Open window (ventilation)
Step-by-step procedure
- Put on gloves, open a window
- Pour 200 ml of Vitaclean pipe cleaner into the drain
- Pour 5 tablespoons of baking soda into the center of the drain (NaHCO₃ + NaOH strengthens the alkaline effect and also neutralizes organic acids)
- Add 200 ml of hot water (~50°C) — this activates the agent and releases CO₂ from the soda
- Action time: 30 minutes
- Flush with 10 L of hot water (~60°C) from the sink or shower
- Sniff test — the odor should be neutral after 5–10 minutes of airing
Types of odors + diagnosis
"Rotten egg" smell (hydrogen sulfide)
Cause: anaerobic bacteria deep in the biofilm (less oxygen = H₂S production)
Repair: standard Vitaclean pipe cleaner + baking soda, 30 min
"Sour" smell (organic acids)
Cause: aerobic bacteria breaking down milk fats and soaps
Repair: standard Vitaclean pipe cleaner (30 min) — acids are neutralized by NaOH
"Sewage" smell (mix of gases)
Cause: 1) Dry trap (most common), 2) Very advanced biofilm
Repair:
- First check the trap — does it have water? If not: pour 500 ml of water + 50 ml of Vitaclean pipe cleaner
- If it has water: standard Vitaclean pipe cleaner + baking soda cycle
"Moldy" / "Musty" smell
Cause: lingering moisture + fungi (rarely in pipes, more often in a rarely used bathtub trap)
Repair: 50 ml Vitaclean pipe cleaner + 50 ml white vinegar (5%) — white vinegar + Vitaclean pipe cleaner is a chemically dangerous combination, so:
- DO NOT mix Vitaclean pipe cleaner with vinegar
- Procedure: Vitaclean pipe cleaner 30-min cycle, flush with 10 L of water, second cycle after 24h with 50 ml of white vinegar in 200 ml of water (works on fungi)
Dry trap — most common cause in unused drains
Diagnosis
Check if the odor appears in a room with a rarely used drain:
- Guest bathroom (sink)
- Second shower (rarely used)
- Toilet flush in a guest restroom
- Washing machine drain (if the washing machine broke and hasn't been used for months)
Mechanism
Every drain has a U-shaped trap filled with water. Water blocks gases from the sewer. If a drain is not used for 2–4 weeks, the water in the trap evaporates. Then sewer gases enter the apartment directly.
Repair (5 minutes)
- Pour 500 ml of water into the drain — you are refilling the trap
- Add 50 ml of Vitaclean pipe cleaner + 100 ml of hot water — this kills bacteria in the standing water (without Vitaclean pipe cleaner, water in the trap can also start smelling after 6–12 months)
- Leave it — the trap now has fresh water with disinfectant
Maintenance
- Every 2 weeks: check all unused drains, add 500 ml of water
- Every 2 months: 50 ml of Vitaclean pipe cleaner + 200 ml of water into every unused trap
1-day odor removal plan
Morning (5 minutes)
- Vitaclean pipe cleaner + baking soda cycle on all drains in the room with the odor (kitchen: sink + dishwasher; bathroom: sink + shower + bathtub)
- Open windows for 30 minutes
After 30 minutes
- Flush 10 L of hot water through each drain
- Sniff test — odor? If clearly weaker = repeat tomorrow in the room where the odor is strongest
Evening (5 minutes)
- Second Vitaclean pipe cleaner + baking soda cycle in the room where the odor was strongest in the morning
- Flush before going to sleep
The next day
- Sniff test in the morning — the odor should be completely eliminated
In the vast majority of cases, a 1-day cycle is sufficient.
Comparison: Vitaclean pipe cleaner + baking soda vs alternatives
| Agent | Odor effectiveness | Safe for PVC | Price/cycle | Time |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Vitaclean pipe cleaner + baking soda | 95% | ✅ yes | under 10 PLN | 30 min |
| Baking soda only (5 tablespoons) | 30% | ✅ | ~0.30 PLN | 30 min |
| Baking soda + vinegar | 40% | ✅ | ~1 PLN | 30 min |
| Domestos bleach | 80% | ⚠ chlorine (toxic smell) | ~3 PLN | 30 min |
| Disinfectant tablets | 60% | ✅ | ~5 PLN | 60 min |
| Essential oils (tea tree) | 20% (masks) | ✅ | ~10 PLN | 0 min |
| Plumber | 95% (with mechanical cleaning) | ✅ | 200-500 PLN | 1-2h |
Vitaclean pipe unclogger + soda wins: effectiveness (95%), safety, price, no chlorine risk.
What NOT to do
❌ Essential oils only — they mask the smell, but the biofilm continues to grow. Once the air clears, the smell returns.
❌ Domestos bleach — it kills bacteria but leaves a chlorine smell in the apartment for 1-3 days. Plus, chlorine doesn't dissolve biofilm — it only disinfects it. The bacteria return after 1-2 weeks.
❌ Mixing Vitaclean pipe unclogger with vinegar — causes a violent reaction; do not pour them in at the same time. If you want to use vinegar (for mold), use it 24 hours after using Vitaclean pipe unclogger.
❌ Neglecting the siphon in unused drains — the smell returns every 1-2 weeks. Preventive maintenance with 500 ml of water every 2 weeks eliminates it.
Long-term maintenance
Weekly
- 50 ml Vitaclean pipe unclogger + 200 ml hot water in every regularly used drain (sink, shower, bathtub, washbasin)
- Action time: 10 minutes, then rinse
Every 2 weeks
- 500 ml of water into unused drains (guest bathrooms) — maintains the siphon
Every 2 months
- Full Vitaclean pipe unclogger + soda cycle (200 ml + 5 tablespoons of soda) in all drains — prevents biofilm
Seasonally (once every 6 months)
- Disassembling siphons under the sink, in the bathtub — mechanical cleaning (How to clean a siphon)

Frequently Asked Questions
Where does the smell from the kitchen/bathroom drain come from? +
Three main sources: (1) Biofilm — a layer of bacteria and organic residue on pipe walls (60% of cases); bacteria produce hydrogen sulfide and organic gases, (2) Dry siphon in an unused drain (guest bathroom, second shower) — sewer gases go directly into the apartment, (3) Dried clog — the decomposition of organic residue produces a foul odor.
How to remove the smell from the kitchen drain? +
Vitaclean pipe unclogger + soda cycle: (1) Pour 200 ml of Vitaclean pipe unclogger into the drain, (2) Add 5 tablespoons of baking soda (NaHCO₃) directly into the center, (3) Pour in 200 ml of hot water (~50°C) — it will create a mineral reaction, (4) Let it work for 30 minutes, (5) Flush with 10 L of hot water. Vitaclean pipe unclogger chemically attacks the biofilm, soda neutralizes the pH (odor), and hot water flushes away the residue. Effectiveness: 90% of cases.
What does it mean if the drain smells like rotten eggs? +
The smell is hydrogen sulfide (H₂S) — a product of anaerobic bacteria in the pipe biofilm. These bacteria live without oxygen (in deep layers of the biofilm) and ferment dairy proteins, fats, and soaps into hydrogen sulfide. Fix: Vitaclean pipe unclogger + soda removes the biofilm = bacteria have nowhere to live = the smell disappears. Weekly maintenance with Vitaclean pipe unclogger eliminates it permanently.
Can the smell from the drain come from the building's sewer system? +
YES — this is a dry siphon. Every drain has a U-shaped siphon full of water — the water blocks gas from the sewer. If a drain is unused for 1-2 months (guest bathroom, second washbasin), the water in the siphon evaporates and gases enter the apartment directly. Fix: pour 500 ml of water + 50 ml of Vitaclean pipe unclogger into each unused drain — water will remain in the siphon, and Vitaclean pipe unclogger will kill bacteria in the standing water.
How often should drains be cleaned so they don't smell? +
Prevention is key: 50 ml of Vitaclean pipe unclogger + 200 ml of hot water once a week in every kitchen and bathroom drain (sink, shower, bathtub, washbasin). This prevents biofilm accumulation. Plus: unused drains (guest) — every 2 weeks, pour 500 ml of water so the siphon doesn't dry out. With this maintenance: the smell will never appear.
Can I mix Vitaclean pipe unclogger with other chemicals in the drain? +
ABSOLUTELY NOT. Vitaclean pipe unclogger is alkaline (pH ~13), toilet cleaners are acidic (pH ~1-2). Combining alkaline + acidic = a violent chemical reaction with heat generation and toxic vapors. Rule: one cycle, one product. After using Vitaclean pipe unclogger, rinse thoroughly with 10 L of hot water (24 hours between uses is safe) before using any other product.
What if the smell appears in only one room? +
Then the source is local. Check all drains in that room (sink, shower, bathtub, washbasin). Most common culprit: (1) Dry siphon of an unused washbasin, (2) Cracked siphon under the sink (gas is escaping — plumber repair ~50-150 PLN), (3) Cracked gasket in the pipe joint (also a plumber). If you rule these 3 out, Vitaclean pipe unclogger solves the vast majority of cases.
