Removed DeLonghi milk frother nozzle submerged in Vitaclean milk system cleaner solution — 30-minute soaking process

Frother nozzle — the smallest, most frequently neglected part of a coffee machine

The frother nozzle (steam wand, milk frother nozzle) is a tube with 4-8 microchannels 0.5-1 mm in diameter — air enters the milk through these channels, creating foam. Every clogged channel = less air = weaker foam.

Milk proteins dry inside the microchannels within minutes of use. A daily 3-5 second steam rinse removes fresh residue, but after 4-6 weeks, the microchannels become coated with a layer of dried proteins 0.1-0.2 mm thick. That is enough to reduce airflow by 30-50%.

Good news: you can clean the nozzle in 30 minutes, without service, without disassembling the coffee machine.

How to remove the frother nozzle — 4 most common types

Type 1: Screw-mounted nozzle (DeLonghi Magnifica, ECAM)

  1. The machine must be COLD (wait 30 mins after a steam cycle)
  2. Below the nozzle, you will find 1-2 small screws (usually Phillips or Torx)
  3. Unscrew the screws — typically 5-10 turns
  4. Pull the nozzle down
  5. After cleaning: reinsert and tighten the screws (NOT too hard, to avoid stripping the thread)

Type 2: Ring-mounted nozzle (Saeco Xelsis, Lirika)

  1. Machine must be cold
  2. Grip the ring at the base of the nozzle, turn counter-clockwise
  3. After 1-2 turns, the ring unscrews
  4. Pull the nozzle down
  5. After cleaning: reinsert the nozzle and turn the ring clockwise

Type 3: Clip-mounted nozzle (Krups Intuition, Evidence)

  1. Machine must be cold
  2. Press the clip at the base of the nozzle (usually metal or plastic)
  3. While holding the clip down, slide the nozzle down
  4. After cleaning: push the nozzle back in (the clip will snap shut automatically)

Type 4: Detachable tip (manual machines — La Marzocco, Rancilio Silvia)

  1. Machine must be cold
  2. Grip the end of the nozzle (the one with holes), turn counter-clockwise
  3. After 1-2 turns, the tip unscrews from the body
  4. Only soak the tip (the one with holes) — the body remains attached to the machine
  5. After cleaning: screw the tip back on

For safety: always check your model's manual. Most manufacturers provide a PDF online + YouTube videos ("how to clean steam wand DeLonghi" etc.).

Method 1: Soaking in Vitaclean milk system cleaner (30 min)

The simplest, most accessible method. It only requires a bottle of Vitaclean milk system cleaner and a clean bowl.

Procedure

  1. Remove the nozzle (types described above)
  2. Pour into the bowl:
    • 30 ml Vitaclean milk system cleaner (1 tablespoon)
    • 300 ml hot water (~50-60°C, from a kitchen faucet or kettle after cooling)
    • 1:10 ratio — stronger than standard
  3. Submerge the nozzle completely in the solution
  4. Wait 30 minutes — the proteins will dissolve
  5. Remove the nozzle and rinse under running hot water
  6. Check under light — are the holes clear? If yes → step 7. If no → step 8.
  7. Reinsert the nozzle into the machine, tighten/clip it in
  8. (Optional) Use a thin sewing needle (~0.5-0.7 mm) for stubborn blockages — insert, wiggle 2-3 times, remove. Repeat step 5.

Final test

Brew a cappuccino. The foam should be noticeably better than before the cycle. If it's still weak, the problem was not the nozzle but elsewhere — Coffee machine not frothing milk — 7 reasons.

Total time: 30-40 minutes (including wait time).

Method 2: Ultrasonic cleaner (5-10 min)

Faster and more effective, but requires equipment.

What you need

  • Household ultrasonic cleaner (cheap ~150 PLN, mid-range ~300 PLN, professional 500+) — a capacity of 600 ml-2 L is enough
  • Vitaclean ultrasonic cleaner concentrate — alcohol-free, for ultrasonic cleaner devices

Procedure

  1. Remove the nozzle (types described above)
  2. Pour into the ultrasonic cleaner:
    • 15 ml Vitaclean ultrasonic cleaner concentrate (1 tablespoon)
    • 600 ml warm water (~30-40°C)
  3. Place the nozzle in the cleaner's basket, submerged in the solution
  4. Run a 5-10 minute cycle (household cleaners typically have 3, 5, 10, and 20-minute cycles)
  5. Remove the nozzle and rinse under running water
  6. Check under light — in 95% of cases, the holes will be clear
  7. Reinsert into the machine

Why ultrasonic cleaning works better

35-45 kHz ultrasound creates cavitation microbubbles in the liquid. The bubbles implode on the surface of dried proteins, mechanically breaking down the sediment. This works inside the microchannels (0.5 mm) where regular water and even Vitaclean milk system cleaner solution would take 30+ minutes to reach.

Plus: Vitaclean ultrasonic cleaner concentrate is alcohol-free — safe for the silicone in the nozzle. Some ultrasonic cleaner concentrates contain ethyl alcohol (denatured alcohol), which damages silicone.

When is it worth buying an ultrasonic cleaner: if you already have an electric shaver, jewelry, or glasses to clean regularly — the cleaner is worth it. Just for the coffee machine — a 30-minute soak is enough.

Comparison: soaking vs ultrasonic cleaner

Dimension Soaking 30 min Ultrasonic cleaner 5-10 min
Time 30 min 5-10 min
Effectiveness good higher
Equipment cost 0 PLN 150-500 PLN
Cycle cost less than 1.50 PLN for Vitaclean milk system cleaner less than 0.60 PLN for Vitaclean ultrasonic cleaner concentrate
What else can it do Chemical soaking only Jewelry, glasses, shavers, coins, e-cigarettes

Most common mistakes

Removing the nozzle from a hot coffee machine — hot metal is expanded, you can break screws or mounts. Always do this when the machine is cold.

Using too thick a needle for unclogging — nails, screwdrivers enlarge micro-channels, permanently worsening the foam. Only use a thin sewing needle or a pin.

Soaking in vinegar — 8% acetic acid (pH 2.5) destroys silicone seals in the nozzle. After 2-3 times, the seals lose their elasticity. Professional Vitaclean milk system cleaner is safer.

Skipping the "check against the light" step — without this verification, you won't know if the cycle worked. After soaking, hold the nozzle up to a light bulb at an angle and check each of the 4-8 holes.

Reattaching too tightly — over-tightening screws will strip the thread. Correct force: tighten until you feel resistance + 1/4 turn.

Prevention — how to avoid reaching this state

  1. Daily 3-5s of steam after cappuccino — rinse the nozzle of milk residue
  2. Wipe the nozzle externally with a damp cloth after every latte
  3. Weekly cycle with Vitaclean milk system cleaner for the entire milk circuit
  4. Monthly — remove the nozzle, soak preventively for 15 minutes in a 1:20 solution (15 ml Vitaclean milk system cleaner + 300 ml water)
  5. Nozzle replacement — every 5-7 years the micro-structure of the metals expands the openings, it cannot be fixed, buy a new nozzle from the manufacturer (~50-150 PLN)

Frequently Asked Questions

How to remove the frother nozzle from the coffee machine? +

In 90% of models: the nozzle has 2-3 screws on the casing or a release clip. DeLonghi (Magnifica, ECAM): unscrew the small screw at the base of the nozzle, pull downwards. Saeco: unscrew the ring at the base, the nozzle will slide off. Krups: release clip (press with your thumb and slide out). Always check the coffee machine manual — look for the "cleaning the steam wand" or "cleaning the milk frother" section.

What to use for soaking the frother nozzle? +

Three options: (1) Vitaclean milk system cleaner 1:10 (30 ml + 300 ml hot water, soak for 30 min) — the standard preparation for the milk system, most readily available, (2) Vitaclean ultrasonic cleaner concentrate 1:40 (15 ml + 600 ml water) in an ultrasonic cleaner (5-10 min cycle) — faster, but requires equipment (~150-300 PLN for the cleaner), (3) hot soapy water — works poorly, only for fresh residue.

Can I use a needle to unclog the nozzle? +

Yes, but carefully. After soaking (step 1), if you see that individual holes are still blocked (check against the light), use a thin sewing needle (~0.5-0.7 mm diameter) or a pin. Insert gently, move back and forth 2-3 times. DO NOT use thicker tools (nails, screwdrivers) — you will enlarge the opening and permanently ruin the foam quality.

How often to soak the frother nozzle? +

Standard: once a month, for prevention. With intensive use (5+ cappuccinos a day): every 2 weeks. In a café: daily after closing — soak the nozzle in a 1:10 solution of Vitaclean milk system cleaner or use Vitaclean ultrasonic cleaner concentrate in an ultrasonic cleaner. Plus daily steam rinsing for 3-5s after each cappuccino — this prevents 80% of build-up.

What if the nozzle won't come out of the coffee machine? +

If the nozzle seems stuck: (1) check if you have unscrewed all screws/clips (sometimes they are hidden on the other side), (2) the coffee machine must be cold (hot metal expands), (3) do not pull by force — you may break it. If it still won't move, contact coffee machine service (50-100 PLN just for removal and cleaning). Better than causing damage.

Does an ultrasonic cleaner actually help? +

Yes, much faster than soaking. Micro-bubbles from ultrasound break up dried milk proteins mechanically in 5-10 minutes instead of 30 minutes of soaking. Plus, they reach micro-channels (0.5 mm) where plain water cannot reach. Vitaclean ultrasonic cleaner concentrate is alcohol-free (safe for silicone in the nozzle) and biodegradable. Home ultrasonic cleaners: ~150-300 PLN, it's worth it for regular use (shavers, jewelry, glasses as well).

The foam is still weak after the cycle — what now? +

If soaking or the ultrasonic cleaner doesn't help, the problem is likely not in the nozzle, but in: (1) a dirty milk system — run a cycle with Vitaclean milk system cleaner, (2) worn silicone seals — service costs 80-150 PLN, (3) poor milk — try a 5-minute test.
