DeLonghi and hard water — why service centers have records of this brand
DeLonghi is the most popular automatic coffee machine in Polish homes (Magnifica, ECAM, PrimaDonna, Dinamica). Every fourth machine that ends up in a service center with "not heating" or "leaking" symptoms has neglected descaling as the root cause. DeLonghi is more sensitive here than manual portafilter machines because automatic machines have tighter steam lines and more sensitive pumps.
The manufacturer recommends descaling every 240 brewed espressos — in a home used 2–3 times a day, this occurs every 3–4 months. With hard tap water (12–18 dGH), the "descale machine" message will appear sooner — sometimes after 6–8 weeks.
What you need before starting
- Descaler — Vitaclean descaler (1 L = 8 cycles), DeLonghi EcoDecalk, or a compatible product with a "safe for silicone seals" declaration
- Container for the remaining solution — minimum 1.5 L, preferably glass or plastic (NOT aluminum)
- Clean water for two rinsing cycles — approx. 3–4 L
- Removed softening filter (if you have one in the tank — it absorbs the active ingredient)
Remove coffee capsules / the pre-ground coffee container so they remain dry — during the process, the solution will drip from under the grate.
Step-by-step procedure — automatic DeLonghi
Step 1: Prepare the solution
Pour into the water tank:
- 100 ml of Vitaclean descaler concentrate (or 100 ml of DeLonghi EcoDecalk)
- Top up with 1 L of water (ratio ~1:10 — DeLonghi recommends a weaker concentration than the universal 1:4 due to thinner lines)
The DeLonghi tank usually holds 1.8 L — so 1.1 L of solution in the tank is enough; do not fill the rest of the tank with clean water (it will be added automatically during the program).
Step 2: Start the descaling program
In the DeLonghi menu:
- ECAM, PrimaDonna: Gear icon / "Menu" → Maintenance → Descaling → OK
- Magnifica S: Wrench icon on the panel → Decalcify → OK
- Dinamica: tap the droplets icon → Yes
The machine will ask you to place a container under the spout (for at least 1.8 L) and press OK.
Step 3: Descaling cycle
Lasts 15–18 minutes. The machine will pump the solution through the heating element in cycles of 1–2 minutes with 30–60-second intervals. Do not turn off the machine in the process — interrupting the cycle may require a manual reset at a service center.
Midway through the cycle (typically after 7–8 minutes), the machine may ask you to empty the container and replace it. Pour out the contents, wipe the container, and continue.
Step 4: Rinsing
After the descaling cycle finishes, the machine will ask you to:
- Remove the tank, rinse it, and fill with clean water to the max
- Reinsert it and confirm OK
- Run through 2 full tanks of clean water (the machine does this automatically)
This is a critical step — without rinsing, the first coffee after descaling will have a distinct aftertaste, and in extreme cases, the acid will remain in the circuit and damage the seal membranes.
Step 5: Resetting the alert
In most DeLonghi machines, the reset is automatic after the final rinsing cycle — the machine displays "Maintenance complete" and returns to the main menu. If the "descale" message remains:
- ECAM/PrimaDonna: Menu → Maintenance → Descaling → hold OK for 5 seconds → screen will ask "Reset?" → Yes
- Magnifica: hold the wrench icon for 8 seconds
Step 6: First coffee after descaling
Brew the first espresso after the cycle, serve yourself, and… pour it away. It may have a trace of a metallic aftertaste from residual leftovers in the circuit. Drink the second coffee normally — the brewing temperature should be noticeably higher, and the flow faster.
DeLonghi models — differences in the procedure
| Line | Tank capacity | Cycle time | Specifications |
|---|---|---|---|
| Magnifica S / Magnifica Smart | 1.8 L | 25 min | Simplest menu — wrench button |
| ECAM (22.110, 23.460, 25.462) | 1.8–2.0 L | 25–30 min | Button menu, reset after cycle usually automatic |
| PrimaDonna (Class, Soul, Elite) | 2.2 L | 30–35 min | Touchscreen, requires larger doses (125 ml + 1.2 L water) |
| Dinamica / Dinamica Plus | 1.8 L | 25–30 min | Touchscreen, water hardness sensor (auto-frequency) |
| La Specialista | 2.5 L (semi-automatic) | manual, ~20 min | No program — manual like a portafilter machine (guide to descaling without a program) |
Common problems with DeLonghi descaling
Message does not disappear after the cycle — you skipped the reset step. Repeat Step 5. If reset still doesn't work: the cycle was likely interrupted — run it again from the beginning.
Machine stops midway through the cycle — usually due to lack of water (tank wasn't topped up in time) or the waste container is full. Check both, empty, and retry.
Coffee has an aftertaste after descaling — not enough rinsing cycles. Run 1–2 more tanks of clean water. Check the full chapter on aftertaste after descaling.
Espresso flow is still weak — descaling removed limescale from the heating element, but the spout nozzle may be clogged with coffee grounds. Remove the nozzle, soak in Vitaclean solution (1:4) for 15 minutes, rinse, and put it back.
The color indicator remained pink — this is a good sign: the solution did not exhaust its full strength in a single cycle. You can use it to descale a kettle or an iron. The indicator will turn yellow when the solution becomes saturated with limescale.
Prevention — how to descale your DeLonghi less often
- Water softening filter in the tank — DeLonghi has a compatible "Aqua Friendly" filter (~80 PLN, replace every 2 months). It reduces water hardness by 60-80% and extends the period between descaling cycles by 2-3 times.
- Filtered water — alternatively, fill the tank with water from a filter pitcher (Brita, Aquaphor)
- Empty the tank daily — in the evening, pour out any remaining water and leave the tank dry
- "Auto-clean" function after every milk drink — use after cappuccino/latte to save the frother nozzle
Safety
- ⚠ Do not skip rinsing cycles — acid residues in the circuit spoil the taste and, over time, damage the seals
- ⚠ Never use vinegar in a DeLonghi — you may be refused service under warranty
- ⚠ Do not turn off the machine during a descaling cycle — interruption requires a service reset
- Safe for DeLonghi: Vitaclean descaler, DeLonghi EcoDecalk, any descaler with a declaration of compatibility with silicone seals
- DO NOT use on: the external housing of the machine (scratches), wooden surfaces nearby

Frequently Asked Questions
What product should I use to descale my DeLonghi coffee machine? +
DeLonghi sells its own EcoDecalk (~50 PLN / 500 ml), but any universal descaler based on amidosulfonic acid with corrosion inhibitors is compatible — such as Vitaclean descaling concentrate (1 L = 8 cycles). Homemade solutions (vinegar, citric acid) work, but with regular use, they damage silicone seals. DeLonghi warranty requires a "compatible descaler" — Vitaclean meets this requirement.
How long does descaling a DeLonghi take? +
The whole process takes 25-30 minutes. The descaling program itself is about 15-18 minutes (pumping the solution in cycles with breaks), plus 2 rinsing cycles of ~5 minutes each. You cannot brew coffee during the process — plan it for the evening or before leaving for work.
What does the "descale" message on a DeLonghi mean? +
The "descale unit" message appears when the machine detects a 15-20% drop in water flow through the heating element. It is calculated based on the number of coffees brewed (typically every 240 espressos in home models). Do not ignore the message — DeLonghi will block the brewing function if it is ignored for too long.
Do I need to reset my DeLonghi after descaling? +
Yes. After finishing the rinsing cycles, go to the Settings menu (gear icon) → Maintenance → Descale → Reset. Without a reset, the message will remain and the machine will think it still needs to be descaled. In models with a touchscreen, the reset is often automatic after the last rinse cycle.
Can I use vinegar for my DeLonghi? +
DeLonghi explicitly forbids the use of vinegar in its manuals — its aggressive pH (~2.5) destroys silicone seals and the frother arm over time. Warranty service may be refused if vinegar residue is detected. Safer: professional descalers (Vitaclean descaling concentrate or the proprietary DeLonghi EcoDecalk).
My DeLonghi is leaking from the bottom after descaling — what should I do? +
The three most common causes: (1) missed solution residue in the drip tray — wipe and check again, (2) the seal under the steam valve has dried out — give the machine 24 hours of normal operation before assessing, (3) if it leaks constantly and there is a distinct puddle underneath — the seal requires professional replacement (approx. 80-150 PLN). You can rule out the second cause (dry seal) by brewing 5-7 espressos immediately after descaling.
