Three automatic coffee machines – Krups Intuition, Philips Series 5000, and Siemens EQ.6 side-by-side with colorful descaling solutions

Three brands, three approaches – but one descaler is enough

Krups, Philips (including the Saeco brand), and Siemens, along with DeLonghi, are the 3 most popular automatic coffee machine brands in Poland. Each has its own descaling management system – from menus to messages. But chemically, they require the same thing: a descaler based on amidosulfonic acid with corrosion inhibitors, compatible with silicone seals and copper heaters.

This means that one bottle of universal Vitaclean descaler concentrate (8 cycles) is enough for ~3 years of regular descaling of all three brands in one household. Branded descalers (Krups F054 ~50 PLN / 500 ml, Philips CA6700 ~45 PLN / 250 ml, Siemens TZ80002 ~40 PLN / 500 ml) work the same way, but are 2-4× more expensive per liter.

Krups – descaling EA8xxx, Intuition, Evidence

When Krups asks for descaling

The "CALC" message (or a flashing red descaling indicator) appears after 50-80 brewed espressos. In the Krups EA8050 and Intuition models, this number is dynamically adjusted based on water hardness – in very hard water, the alert will appear after 30-40 cycles.

Once the message appears, you have 20-30 cycles before Krups locks the brewing function – do not ignore the alert. Some models (Evidence Plus EA89) lock up faster.

Krups step-by-step procedure

  1. Remove the Claris filter (if installed – it adsorbs the active ingredient)
  2. Solution: 100 ml of Vitaclean descaler + 750 ml of water in the tank (Krups tank 1.4 L – do not fill to the top)
  3. Start the program: hold the "on/off" button + "steam" button simultaneously for 3 seconds → CL or CALC will appear on the display
  4. Place a 1.5 L container under the spout → confirm with OK
  5. Descaling cycle 18-22 minutes (the machine pumps in 30-60 s cycles with pauses)
  6. Replace the tank with clean water, place a new container
  7. Rinse cycle 1: 6-8 minutes → change the water
  8. Rinse cycle 2: 6-8 minutes → the machine finishes with an OK message or simply the absence of the CALC alert
  9. Reinsert the Claris filter

Total time: 30-35 minutes.

Krups – frequent issues

  • CALC doesn't disappear after the cycle – you missed the step of refilling with clean water or interrupted the cycle. Repeat the program from the beginning
  • Krups makes a "click click" sound without pumping – no water in the tank or the tank isn't fully seated. Remove and reinsert (should hear a light "click")
  • The first espresso after the cycle is lukewarm – heater temperature returns to normal after 2-3 espressos. Drink the second one as normal

Philips Series 3000/5000 and Saeco Xelsis – CALC & CLEAN

When Philips asks for descaling

Philips machines have two scenarios:

  1. Flashing water drop icon – "descaling recommended" alert (after 100-150 espresso cycles)
  2. Red warning icon + "CALC & CLEAN" message – required immediately, some models lock brewing

Saeco Xelsis (part of the Philips group) behaves identically – same program, same messages.

Philips/Saeco procedure

  1. Remove the AquaClean filter (if you use one – it reduces descaler effectiveness)
  2. Solution in the tank: 250 ml of Vitaclean descaler + 1 L of water (Philips has a larger 1.8-2 L tank)
  3. Activate the program: hold the "aroma strength" button + "calc'nclean" button, or navigate to Settings → Maintenance → CALC & CLEAN
  4. Place a 1.8 L container under the spout
  5. Descaling cycle 15-18 min (Philips divides this into 3-4 phases with pauses)
  6. After the "add water" signal: rinse the tank, add 1 L of clean water
  7. Rinse cycle 12 min (Philips runs one long rinse cycle instead of two shorter ones)
  8. Reinsert the AquaClean filter (if present)

Total time: 30 minutes.

Saeco-specific tip

Saeco Xelsis has an "AquaClean Filter Bypass" function – it temporarily disables the filter for the descaling cycle, without needing to physically remove it. Activate in Settings → Filter → Bypass for Cleaning.

Siemens EQ.3/EQ.6/EQ.9 – calc'nClean

When Siemens asks for descaling

Siemens uses a gauge in the form of a 5-level bar. When the bar reaches 5/5, the machine requires the "calc'nClean" program. The bar fills faster with hard water.

On the EQ.6 plus and EQ.9, the machine may also display the text message "Calc'nClean required" on the screen.

Siemens procedure

  1. Remove the BRITA Intenza filter (Siemens uses a BRITA filter integrated into the tank)
  2. Solution: 100 ml of Vitaclean descaler + 1 L of water (1.7 L tank)
  3. Activate the program: hold the "calc'nClean" button for 3 seconds or via Settings → Care → Descaling
  4. Place a 1.5 L container under the spout
  5. Descaling + cleaning cycle 25-30 min (Siemens combines descaling with steam nozzle cleaning in one program)
  6. After the signal: add 1 L of clean water, continue
  7. 2 rinse cycles of 5 min each
  8. Reinsert the BRITA Intenza filter

Total time: 30-35 minutes.

Siemens-specific feature

The EQ.6 plus and EQ.9 have automatic water hardness detection (conductivity sensor). After descaling, the machine will rescale the bar itself and will alert with the appropriate frequency in the future – you don't need to configure the hardness manually.

Common cross-brand mistakes

Failing to remove the filter – this applies to all three brands. A water softening filter (Claris/AquaClean/BRITA) adsorbs the active ingredient in the descaler, meaning you are essentially running the cycle with plain water.

Too weak a concentration – "I poured a little bit in and added lots of water" = limescale remains. Stick to the dosage recommended per brand (table above).

Resetting the alert – Krups and Philips usually reset automatically after the cycle. Siemens sometimes requires manual confirmation by pressing "OK" after the program finishes.

Mixing descalers – if you start a cycle with descaler A, adding descaler B halfway through changes the chemical composition of the solution and may weaken the effect of the corrosion inhibitors. One cycle = one descaler.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which descaler should I use to clean my Krups coffee machine? +

In the user manual, Krups recommends its own F054 descaler or a universal one based on amidosulfonic acid with corrosion inhibitors. Vitaclean descaler meets these requirements (5-15% amidosulfonic acid + citric acid + inhibitors) and is 2-3 times cheaper than the proprietary F054. Home methods (vinegar) are unacceptable – Krups excludes them in their warranty terms.

What does CALC mean on a Krups machine? +

The "CALC" message (or descaling indicator) appears when the machine detects a drop in water flow through the heating element. In Krups EA8xxx models, the alert appears after about 50-80 brewed espressos. Once the message appears, you have 20-30 cycles left before the machine disables the brewing function – do not ignore it.

How long does descaling take for a Philips Series 5000? +

The full "CALC & CLEAN" program takes 30 minutes: 15-18 minutes for the descaling itself in cycles with pauses, plus 2 rinsing cycles of ~6 minutes each. Requirements: 250 ml of solution + 1 L of water in the tank, and a 1.8 L container under the spout. The procedure is identical for the Saeco Xelsis (also from the Philips group).

Does the Siemens EQ.6 have a calc'nClean program? +

Yes. All Siemens EQ.3, EQ.6 plus, EQ.6, and EQ.9 models have a built-in "calc'nClean" program activated by a long press of the steam icon button or via the service menu. The cycle takes 25-30 minutes. Siemens accepts any descaler "compatible with automatic machines" – Vitaclean descaler is on the list.

What if my Philips machine stops halfway through descaling? +

The two most common reasons are: (1) not enough solution in the tank – the machine interrupts the cycle when there is no water to pump. Top up with a 1:4 solution and press OK to continue. (2) Full wastewater container – empty it, wipe it, and put it back. After both actions, press OK and the program will continue from where it left off.

Can I use descaling tablets instead of liquid? +

Yes, but they are less convenient – tablets take longer to dissolve, sometimes incompletely, and the concentration in the solution is less predictable. Liquid descalers (like Vitaclean descaler) provide immediate concentration and even distribution of the active ingredient. Plus: a concentrate lasts for 8 cycles, whereas tablets for 1-2 cycles.
